Community Building

in Los Angeles 🇺🇸

Intermediate

The intentional effort to create, grow, and sustain a welcoming local bachata scene through events, inclusion, and shared values.

Why it matters

Without strong community building, even cities with talented dancers see their scenes decline. Cliques form, beginners feel unwelcome, drama goes unaddressed, and people drift away. Intentional community builders are the unsung heroes who keep dance floors alive and growing.

Community building in bachata encompasses everything that makes a local scene thrive: organizing regular socials and classes, welcoming newcomers, bridging gaps between experience levels, managing conflict, supporting local instructors and DJs, and creating a culture of respect and growth. It's the invisible infrastructure that determines whether a city's bachata scene flourishes or fades.

Beginner

Be an active community member from day one: show up consistently, introduce yourself to regulars, thank organizers, and post positively about events. Your enthusiasm as a newcomer is contagious and reminds veterans why they fell in love with bachata.

Intermediate

Take on a small community role: help at the door, bring a friend to socials, start a practice group, or share event info on social media. These micro-contributions compound into major scene impact over time.

Advanced

If you see a gap in your local scene—no beginner-friendly socials, no practice nights, no online group—fill it. Partner with venue owners, collaborate with other organizers, and always prioritize the community's health over any individual's ego, including your own.

Practice drill

Community audit: list three things your local scene does well and three gaps. Pick one gap and create a simple plan to address it. Even something as small as a monthly beginner social or a WhatsApp group for practice partners can transform a scene.
