The güira is a metal scraper instrument (a cylindrical grater played with a stiff wire brush) that produces the characteristic 'chi-chi-chi' rhythm in bachata. The güira pattern is the most consistent rhythmic element in any bachata track — it rarely stops, rarely changes, and serves as the musical metronome that holds everything together.
